Many African American voters "have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told Wolf Blitzer Wednesday on CNN's The Situation Room.
"I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative," Cain said. The former Godfather's Pizza CEO added that "it's just brainwashing and people not being open-minded, pure and simple."
Cain did say that he believes between one-third and 50 percent of African American voters are becoming more open to voting Republican, and the notion that black voters will necessarily vote for Obama is not valid.
"More and more black Americans are thinking for themselves. And that's a good thing," Cain said.
His comments come after his surprise win at the Florida straw poll on Sept. 24.
