Hello, 1956!. How's this for headline déjà vu: There's an U.S. president campaigning for reelection and a mob scene in Egypt.
The newsreel below, preserved in digital form by the Internet Archive, shows highlights of the Republican National Convention at which Dwight D. Eisenhower was renominated to head the GOP ticket as well as the frenzy set off in Egypt when then-President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal.
In the coming months, those two storylines would converge: France, Israel, and Britain invaded Egypt (without informing President Eisenhower) in the hopes of ousting Nasser and regaining control of the canal.
The American president, who thought the operation was "a complete mess and botch," pressured the two nations to call off the invasion. In the midst of this crisis, Eisenhower won reelection.
