APEC Fashion Through the Years -- PICTURES

November 14, 2011

Although President Obama declined to continue a lighter tradition at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, where world leaders gather for a "family photo" while dressing in attire that captures the host country's culture, there are still plenty of costumes from years past to enjoy—even if we don't get to see aloha shirts and leis at this year's summit in Honolulu.

Former President Bill Clinton began the tradition during the 1993 APEC summit in Seattle, after he gave bombadier jackets to the world leaders who attended. Leather jackets reappeared during the 1997 summit in Vancouver, British Columbia, which Clinton and China's then-President Jiang Zemin both attended.(KOJI SASHARA/AP, POOL)

During the 1996 APEC summit in Subic Bay, Clinton wore the formal dress of the Philippines, a tieless shirt called a barong tagalog. Sitting next to Clinton is Prime Minister Banharan Silpa-archa of Thailand and Koo Chen-Fu of Taiwan, far right.(JOE MARQUETTE/AP)
