The Associated Press is reporting that top advisers to Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry are making inquiries about the Iowa caucuses, should the conservative stalwart decide to jump into the race.
In an interview with the AP, Perry consultant Dave Carney said that he was starting to ask questions about the caucus and potential staff in the Hawkeye State. Carney cautioned, however, that Perry—who had denied interest in the race for months until recently saying he was thinking about it—has not decided yet if he will jump into the race.
Carney said that Perry will start calling key Iowa Republicans after the Texas Legislature wraps up its special session at the end of June.
"If you're going to compete in Iowa, that's an expensive proposition," Carney said. "You have to have a big field presence there. You have to spend a lot of time there. If you're going to spend a lot of time there, you have to spend a lot of other time raising money elsewhere."
