Obama Approval Down on Economy, Jobs

August 18, 2011

President Obama’s approval ratings on the economy, job creation, and Afghanistan have dropped significantly over the last few months, a new Gallup poll found.

The telephone survey, conducted the week of August 11, found only 26 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the economy, down 11 percentage points since the last poll in May.

Obama's approval ratings are down for his handling of the federal budget deficit – 24 percent – and creating jobs – 29 percent – as well. Approval of Obama on Afghanistan dropped 15 percentage points since the May survey to 38 percent, though it is not the lowest rating he has had during his presidency.

His foreign affairs rating also took a hit – down to 42 percent from 51 percent in May.

Things aren’t all bad for the president. The poll found his approval rating for terrorism is higher than it was at the beginning of 2010, though it is down 10 percentage points from 63 percent in May after Osama bin Laden’s death.

Gallup interviewed about 1,000 adults aged 18 and older living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
