POSSIBLE MCCAIN NOMINEES

Potential Justices: Paul Clement

Clement

Bush's solicitor general from 2005 until last month; now a visiting professor at Georgetown University Law Center

Age: 42

Details: A strong conservative, he has won praise as one of the best Supreme Court advocates, including his defense of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation and other federal laws disdained by conservatives. Clement has been touted as a possible nominee by his predecessor Theodore Olson, a McCain adviser. He won high honors at Harvard Law School, clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia, worked in private practice and as a Senate staffer, taught constitutional law at Georgetown, and became Olson's deputy in 2001. His conservative credentials could pose confirmation problems.
