POSSIBLE MCCAIN NOMINEES

Potential Justices: Michael McConnell

McConnell

U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit

Age: 53

Details: One of the nation's most respected conservative law professors before becoming a judge in 2002, he has been an eloquent critic of liberal decisions on abortion and religion. After clerking for Justice William Brennan, he worked in the solicitor general's office and taught law at the University of Chicago and the University of Utah. Admiring liberal academics backed his confirmation in 2002. But he may be too conservative to be confirmed for the Supreme Court.
