Convention CEO
When Nugen arrived in Denver in June, he reunited with a former colleague, the Rev. Daughtry, who was chief of staff at the DNC before Dean appointed her convention chief executive officer in April 2007. She got her start in politics as a staffer to Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., who represents her home borough of Brooklyn. Daughtry was part of Jesse Jackson's 1984 presidential campaign and was managing director for the 1992 Democratic convention in New York City. She later worked for Labor Secretary Alexis Herman as chief of staff and as assistant secretary for administration.
Tina Flournoy, a Democratic Party activist and an official at the American Federation of Teachers, said that Daughtry--a Star Wars fan--is the "Yoda" in their group of friends. "She's always been serene, calm, and deliberative," Flournoy said.
Daughtry, a fifth-generation Christian pastor, heads a church in Washington and also leads outreach efforts to religious groups for the Democratic Party. She'll be heading up an interfaith service in Denver on August 24, the Sunday before the convention.
