Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., clearly stung Senate Republican leaders when he encouraged Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, to withdraw his guilty plea to "disorderly conduct" in an airport bathroom and fight for his innocence. GOP leaders are eager for Craig to resign. It took them only a heartbeat, after learning of his plea, to throw him under the bus by stripping him of committee assignments and recommending an ethics investigation. Then, just when they thought that Craig was quietly on his way out the door, Specter upset the game plan.
