Congressional Chronicle - A Free Kick for the Democrats
On immigration reform, House Democrats have the legislative equivalent of a free kick to make whatever political points they wish. The Senate in late June defeated a comprehensive, bipartisan immigration bill that President Bush supported but a majority of Republicans opposed. Although the prospects for House action were bleak to begin with, Democrats now see an opportunity to clobber their GOP colleagues. Many Democrats believe that some Republicans' strident denunciation of illegal immigrants will become a partisan bonanza as their own party appeals to Latino voters on what some term the chief civil-rights issue of the early 21st century.
