LOBBYING - K Street For September 1, 2001
Anti-tax honcho Grover Norquist has been helping to lead the Social Security privatization charge, setting up meetings among conservative groups and Bush Administration bigwigs. Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform and one of the Right's go-to guys on K Street, arranged a recent conclave that involved Treasury Secretary Paul H. O'Neill, the United Seniors Association Inc., the 60 Plus Association Inc., and others. Charles Jarvis, the president of the United Seniors Association, and James L. Martin, the president of the 60 Plus Association, say they'll spend big bucks this fall to rally public support for personal accounts. Jarvis's group has earmarked $2 million for a grassroots drive and 30-second radio spots that feature Art Linkletter. Martin's group expects to spend more than $1 million on a grassroots effort. Norquist has also been pressing for joint activities among the various advocates of personal accounts. He organized an August 22 pro-privatization press conference attended by the seniors groups, the American Conservative Union, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and the Small Business Survival Committee. "I've been recommending a coalition of coalitions," Norquist says.
