To understand Barack Obama, it helps to read his 1995 memoir, Dreams From My Father. It was going to be an essay on race, and instead it ended up as an account of his attempts to find his bearings in a country that thinks in terms of black and white. Obama comes across as someone who lets doubt lead to insight, and he shows that he can live with indecision.
