As India strives for wealth, its greenhouse-gas emissions are growing faster than almost any other major nation's. Yet New Delhi resists going green, even though climate change could hit India's poor the hardest.
India's greenhouse-gas emissions are growing at a faster pace than almost any other major country's. Next year India will pass Japan to become the world's fourth-largest emitter of CO2. By 2015, it is expected to supplant Russia in third place. Although it signed the Kyoto Protocol on climate change in 2002, India is largely dragging its feet, refusing to commit to any overall national emissions targets.
