Axelrod: Obama Ready for 'Contract Killers in Super PAC Land'

Adviser says new spot contrasts with ads produced by Romney's campaign.

President Obama’s reelection campaign released a new ad on Monday that paints the president as a warrior fighting for the middle class. The message from the new spot, called "Go," is that Obama has led the nation through the economic crisis.

The ad’s positive message contrasts with the media produced by Mitt Romney’s campaign, senior adviser David Axelrod told reporters in a conference call on Monday. “He’s basically reduced to running a negative campaign,” Axelrod said of the presumptive Republican nominee. “We have a different approach.”

 

The campaign’s commitment to projecting a forward-looking message doesn’t mean they aren’t prepared to fight fire with fire, Axelrod added.

"We’re also going to be prepared – and I want to be clear – to respond to the attacks that we expect to continue not just from the Romney campaign but the [Karl] Rove and Koch brothers contract killers over there in super PAC land who are going to continue to pound away on behalf of governor Romney," Axelrod said.

"We will respond vigorously. We will treat every ad that comes from those entitites as an ad from governor Romney," he said.

 

“Go” will air in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, North Carolina, Florida and Colorado, according to the Obama for America campaign. Axelrod said the campaign plans to spend about $25 million on ads this month.

By the end of next week, if not sooner, “We’ll have spent more money offering people a positive vision of the future, talking about the president's record and the nation's record under his leadership and where we are going, than governor Romney has in his entire campaign,” Axelrod said. Romney and his affiliated super PAC have spent “close to 90 percent” of their media budgets on ads “attacking opponents,” Axelrod said.

The Romney camp was quick to respond to the new ads with an e-mail. “President Obama would like for voters to believe he hasn’t been president for the last three years," spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said. "Americans are disappointed in President Obama’s liberal policies that haven’t made their lives any better. President Obama just hasn’t lived up to his promises. It's harder to get a job, buy or sell a home, and those fortunate enough to have jobs often have less in their paychecks."
