U.K. to Withdraw 500 Troops From Afghanistan in 2012

British Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed Wednesday that the U.K. plans to withdraw 500 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2012, reducing its forces in the country to 9,000, the Associated Press reports.

His announcement came a day after he returned from a two-day visit to Afghanistan, where he met with troops and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The announcement also follows President Obama’s announcement last month that 33,000 U.S. troops will be pulled out by September 2012, leaving 68,000 troops.

All international forces are set to end their combat role by the end of 2014.
