Two American service members were killed on Saturday inside the Afghanistan Interior Ministry in Kabul, the Associated Press reports. Reuters reports that both killed were officers, one a colonel and the other a major.

Following the shooting, a NATO commander recalled all personnel from Afghan ministries.

NATO said that it did not appear the gunman who shot the service members was a westerner.

The shooting comes after days of protests in Afghanistan that were sparked by the alleged burning of Korans at Bagram Air Base, the main U.S. base in the country. President Obama this week sent a letter apologizing for the burnings to his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai.
