Taliban insurgents launched multiple attacks on Western targets across Kabul on Saturday, in what Reuters reports to be one of the boldest assaults in the last decade.

The attacks focused on a heavily secured diplomatic neighborhood and the area around Parliament. Major targets included the German, British and Canadian embassies, the headquarters of Afghanistan’s NATO-led forces, and the World Bank Office.

A Taliban spokesman sent a text message to reporters, saying, “We sent suicide bombers to Kabul and they are now taking over Parliament, US Embassy and all diplomatic buildings,” according to The New York Times.

The Times reports attacks on government targets in at least two provinces as well.
