President Obama signed a secret intelligence “finding” earlier this year authorizing American support of rebels fighting against Syrian government forces, Reuters reports.

The order “broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

When the order was signed is unclear, as is the extent of the support, which apparently “falls short of giving the rebels lethal weapons.” A White House spokesman declined to comment to Reuters.
