A suicide bomber dressed in military garb blew himself up in Yemen's capital on Monday, killing 96 soldiers who had gathered for a military parade dress rehearsal, the Associated Press reported.
The AP described the attack as an apparent assassination attempt on Yemen's defense minister, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, who arrived just minutes before the blast ripped through a city square in the capital, Sana. At least 200 were wounded, the AP said.
The attack came as the country has been stepping up the fight against al-Qaida militants.
Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism John Brennan called Yemeni President Abdo Rabu Mansour Hadi to express condolences, condemn the violence and offer "U.S. assistance on investigation into this tragic incident," according to the White House.
