Federal investigators had “looked at” Wade Michael Page, the gunman suspected of killing six at a Sikh temple on Sunday, on more than one occasion due to his involvement with extremist groups and the possibility that he was helping to fund domestic terrorist groups, according to The Los Angeles Times.

A “senior U.S. law enforcement source” told The Times that not enough evidence was found to open an investigation. It was unclear which federal agency had considered the probe, but tight restrictions are placed on the FBI from collecting information on a U.S. citizen.

Other groups – including the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center – were also aware of Page, who performed in two racist skinhead bands.

Page was killed on Sunday in a shootout with police.
