Report: 13 Percent of U.S. Now Born Abroad

The number of U.S. residents born abroad has risen to its highest level since 1920, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday, with a full 13 percent of the country having been born outside the U.S.    

Forty million U.S. residents in 2010 were born abroad, according to a new report from the Census Bureau, up from 31 million in 2000. One in four of those residents live in California, the report shows: a full 27 percent of the Golden State‚Äôs population in 2010 was born abroad, up from 26 percent a decade earlier.
