Qaddafi Supporters Take First Reported Western Hostages

Supporters of Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi have taken three Dutch marines, according to the Dutch Defense Ministry, The New York Times reports.

The three members of a helicopter crew were captured while trying to evacuate European citizens stranded in Libya. A spokesman for the Defense Ministry told the Times that two civilians were also captured by pro-Qaddafi forces, but have since been released.

The report of the capture -- the first report of Westerners held in Libya's uprising, according to the Times -- was kept secret by authorities until a Dutch newspaper broke the story.
