Panetta: NATO Flights Over Libya to Continue for Now

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in Brussels on Thursday that NATO warplanes will continue to fly over Libya while combat continues between provisional government forces and the forces loyal to Muammer el-Qaddafi, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Despite pressure from some NATO countries to end the flights, both the U.S. and France have argued for keeping up the alliance flights, at least until the provisional government forces can take Qaddafi’s hometown, Surt.

Panetta announced the continuation of the flights at the end of a two days of meetings with defense chiefs and military commanders at NATO headquarters.
