North Korea Launches Its Rocket

April 12, 2012

The rocket launched early Friday in North Korea has apparently failed, crashing into the sea a short time after launch, according to the White House. North Korea launched the rocket, which they said was carrying a satellite, despite international warnings and condemnation.

"Despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, North Korea’s provocative action threatens regional security, violates international law and contravenes its own recent commitments," the White House said in a statement. "The President has been clear that he is prepared to engage constructively with North Korea.  However, he has also insisted that North Korea live up to its own commitments, adhere to its international obligations and deal peacefully with its neighbors."

The missile was launched at 6:39 p.m. EDT and was tracked "on a southerly launch over the Yellow Sea," according to a North American Aerospace Defense Command statement. The first stage fell into the sea about 165km west of Seoul, South Korea, and the "remaining stages were assessed to have failed," according to the statement.
