Mubarak, in Hospital Bed, Makes Court Appearance

August 3, 2011 | 8:56 a.m.

Egypt’s former president, Hosni Mubarak, who appeared in a Cairo court on a hospital bed on Wednesday, pleaded "not guilty" to charges of corruption and involvement in the killing of protesters in his country earlier this year.

“I deny all these charges and accusations categorically,” the bedridden Mubarak said on Tuesday, according to The Washington Post. He is being tried alongside his sons, Alaa and Gamal, who also denied charges of corruption.

The 83-year-old Mubarak, who last appeared publicly in February when he vowed not to resign in the face of protests, has been hospitalized for months. On Tuesday, he appeared on a stretcher behind a defendant’s cage in the Cairo court.

During the hearing, Mubarak supporters chanted and protested the trial outside of the courtroom, until security forces intervened to break up the clash, The Post reports.
