McCain: U.S. Performance on Syria 'Shameful and Disgraceful'

July 8, 2012

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Japan on Sunday that “the days are numbered” for Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, comments that sparked a sharp response from Sen. John McCain.

“The United States has played no leadership role,” said McCain, R-Ariz., on CBS’s Face the Nation. “Now 14,000 people have been massacred by Bashar Assad. The United States performance so far has been shameful and disgraceful.”

McCain, who has long been a vocal critic of the administration and its response to the violence in Syria, said that President Obama should be speaking out more in support of the Syrian people and against the Assad regime; that the U.S. should be providing arms, though not “boots on the ground”; and that a sanctuary should be provided for Syrian refugees.

He rejected the idea that not enough is known about the Syrian opposition for the U.S. to act. “People are being massacred, tortured raped and murdered as a matter of policy,” he said.

McCain added: “My question to the Secretary of State and the President of the United States is, how many more have to die before we take action to help these people?”
