The last U.S. troops left Iraq on Sunday morning, according to news reports.

Soldiers were "whooping, fist bumping and hugging each other in a burst of joy and relief," as they crossed into Kuwait, the Associated Press reported.

The news comes days after the U.S. armed forces cased its colors, formally ending operations in Iraq nearly nine years after the war began.

Nearly 4,500 Americans and 100,000 Iraqis lost their lives, and the U.S. spent $800 billion during the war, in which U.S. forces toppled Saddam Hussein, and helped establish a democracy, whose prospects for success are still uncertain.
