A U.S. Air Force F-15E that crashed Thursday during a "routine training mission" in the United Arab Emirates, a Pentagon official has confirmed.

The fighter jet crashed Thursday morning "while conducting a routine training mission," according to an Air Force release. Originally, defense officials would identify its exact location only as an unidentified country in Southwest Asia, citing host-country concerns. The U.S. often hides its military activities in the UAE and other Persian Gulf countries as occuring in "Southwest Asia" at the request of Arab states.

Both crew members safely ejected and have been met by "first responders," the release said. The cause is under investigation.
