Campaign 2004

NationalJournal.com has returns, poll archives, campaign ads and more on each of these contests. The 2003 elections produced the following party breakdowns and newly elected officials:

2003 Gubernatorial Races
Republicans went three for four in the 2003 governor elections, winning the Oct. 7 California recall and the regularly scheduled Kentucky and Mississippi contests on Nov. 4. On Nov. 15, however, Democrats avoided a shutout by winning in Louisiana. Notably, all four contests resulted in a change of party control.

California Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) defeated incumbent Gray Davis (D).
Kentucky: Ernie Fletcher (R) defeated Ben Chandler (D).
Louisiana: Kathleen Blanco (D) defeated Bobby Jindal (R).
Mississippi: Haley Barbour (R) defeated incumbent Ronnie Musgrove (D).

2003 House Races
The major parties split two special elections in 2003. Democrats in Hawaii held on to the two-year term to which Patsy Mink (D) was posthumously elected, and Republicans in Texas won following Larry Combest's (R) resignation. There was no change in the number of seats controlled by either major party.

2003 Senate Races
There were no Senate elections in 2003, leaving the party breakdown in that chamber at 48 Democrats, 51 Republicans and 1 independent.
