Dems See No Beauty In Taylor's Record

Despite a double-digit lead in the polls, Montana Sen. Max Baucus (D), along with state and national Democrats, last week socked state Sen. Mike Taylor (R) with a trio of ads.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Montana Democratic Party ad, which began airing Friday, ridicules Taylor's business practices at the Michael Taylor Institute of Hair Design, which Taylor ran from 1978 to 1998.
An announcer in the spot says that the federal Department of Education "uncovered Taylor's hair care scam for abusing the student loan program and diverting money to himself," as video of a leisure-suit-clad Taylor giving a man a facial is shown on screen. With disco music playing in the background, the ad charges that Taylor's student loan "abuse" caused "innocent students to default on their loans" and "cost taxpayers thousands and lined Taylor's own pockets."
Baucus' campaign hit Taylor on Thursday with TV and radio ads featuring Montana parents talking about Taylor's education record as a state senator. In the TV ad, Ed Logan says Taylor voted with GOP Gov. Judy Martz "and against Montana schools every step of the way." An announcer alleges that in the state Legislature, Taylor "voted to cut $4 million from schools and said funding our universities is like pouring money down a black hole." On the other hand, according to the spot, Baucus has won money for new computers, teachers and student loans.
Baucus' radio spot contains similar criticisms of Taylor, with the mother of a University of Montana student adding, "Mike Taylor looks out for people like himself -- the millionaires or the special interests."
Greer Margolis Mitchell Burns produced Baucus' ads, while Dixon/Davis Media Group made the party commercial. Both are running statewide.
A week before his latest commercials in the race, Baucus ran TV and radio ads hitting Taylor on Social Security. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and state GOP have aired commercials criticizing Baucus on taxes and his fund-raising practices.
