Campbell's California Crusade

Friday, Aug. 4, 2000
Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif.-15, is running a series of ads in an attempt to increase his recognition with California's 24 million voters for his Senate race against two-term Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D).
Two of Campbell's four ads enlist the support of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who calls Campbell "a maverick like me" and praises Campbell for standing up "to his own party on campaign finance reform."
Campbell's ads discuss his 17-year teaching background. One of the commercials portrays Campbell e-mailing his students and displaying his Web site. The spots also emphasize Campbell's fiscal philosophy as he was named the congressman "least likely to spend taxpayers' money" by the National Taxpayer's Union.
The three 30-second television spots and one 60-second radio commercial, all produced by Roy Fletcher, are running July 31 through Aug. 7 throughout Southern California, the Central Valley and the Inland Empire. The campaign spent between $150,000 and $200,000 on the ad buy.
Feinstein has not yet released any ads, but she maintains a lead in the polls. Campbell released three 15-second ads early in 2000, before he had secured the GOP nomination to run for Senate.
Ad Spotlight has the latest commercials from congressional candidates, WH 2000 hopefuls and issue/advocacy groups.
