Old name, new face. Mark Udall, representing a new generation of the famous Western political family, defeated Gene Nichol, Dave Thomas and Paul Weissmann on Aug. 11 to take the Democratic nomination for Colorado's 2nd District.
"A New Leader" -- one of Udall's pre-primary ads -- is a simple appeal, showing the young and attractive candidate as a caring teacher and family man. Udall is hugged by his daughter and chats with an elderly man while the beauty of Colorado is caught on film, as Udall's concern for family, health care and the environment is discussed by the announcer.
The ad closes with the line, "For our families, for our future." That slogan is trademarked by the Sierra Club, which recently took Missouri Sen. Kit Bond to task for using it in one of his ads. As of now, the Sierra Club has not publicly criticized Udall for his ad.
Ad Spotlight also has recent ads from Nichol and GOP nominee Bob Greenlee. The Almanac of American Politics has a profile Rep. David Skaggs, who is retiring. And the official Mark Udall for Congress Web site can be found here.
Script Of "A New Leader"
ANNOUNCER [V/O]: He's a new leader in the Western tradition of fighting for families and for what's right. As an educator, he knows we need to lower class sizes, raise standards, and make our schools safe. He'll stand his ground to protect our open spaces from growth for future generations. And Mark Udall will fight to make sure medical decisions are made by families and doctors, not HMO bureaucrats. Mark Udall for Congress. For our families, for our future, for our Colorado.
