Will Same-Sex Marriage Be an Issue in the 2014 Midterms?

April 3, 2014

With so many courts moving to overturn state bans, will same-sex marriage be an issue in the 2014 midterms?

DEMOCRATS (87 VOTES)

Yes: 38%
No: 62%

Yes

"In selective states where the GOP nominee is living in the '80s, this will be an issue that can help Dems marginally."

"With the base."

"The tea party will keep this issue alive for decades, even after the Supreme Court rules on the case. See Roe v. Wade."

"Smart Repubs will not talk about marriage."

"Court opposition will energize gays the same way Jim Crow energized African-Americans."

"It's one of the few breezes at the Democrats' backs."

"It will [help further entrench] young voters in the Democratic Party."

No

"Republicans are terrified of this issue, and Dems aren't sure it will help them with the midterm electorate."

"The opposition to gay marriage has jumped the shark."

"The folks who don't like it aren't swing voters anymore."

REPUBLICANS (93 VOTES)

Yes: 34%
No: 66%

Yes

"GOP candidates can still run against the courts imposing their will instead of legislatures taking the lead role. It's a good contrast to the Roe v. Wade process."

"Opponents of same-sex marriage may have more intensity and turn out in higher numbers, especially in more-conservative states."

"The social Right will use it aggressively to turn out their voters in the midterm elections. It will be done quietly so that less motivated moderates are not frightened into voting."

"But only in primaries. We really need to move on as a party."

No

"With a weak economy and Obamacare, Republicans have no incentive to bring it up, nor do Democrats running in (usually red) states that haven't adopted it already."

"Republicans will stay away from 50-50 issues when there are enough 60-40 issues to win with."

"Public opinion is shifting dramatically, and Repubs are finally waking up to the damage they've done to themselves by seeming so intolerant."

"Not if the GOP is smart. The horse is out of the barn on this one."

"The economy and Obamacare are the issues in 2014. Same-sex marriage will return in a big way in 2016."

"But for Dem candidates in red states, it will still be tricky.
