Last week, Press Secretary Jay Carney gave his first briefing at the White House podium. Let's look back at those who spoke for the White House and its chief resident over the years.

Jay Carney has served as Vice President Joe Biden's director of communications. Carney was a reporter at Time magazine for 20 years before becoming Biden's spokesman.

Robert Gibbs, seen here responding to the Moscow airport attack, was the chief spokesman for the White House since the start of Obama's presidency.

Dana Perino served for the last two years of George W. Bush's presidency, 2007-2009.

Tony Snow, Bush's press secretary from 2006-2007, died of cancer in July 2008. Here, he waves goodbye after his last day on the job.

Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary from 2003-2006, went on to write the controversial book What Happened about the administration he represented. McClellan was Bush's longest-serving press secretary.

Ari Fleischer was the first press secretary of the Bush administration and served until July 2003. Today, he is a media consultant for the NFL.

Jake Siewert was President Clinton's last press secretary from 2000-2001. Today, Siewert advises Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Joe Lockhart was President Clinton’s press secretary from 1998-2000. Lockhart recently told The New York Times that the lesson for White House press officers to learn is that, “The most interesting story in the briefing room to reporters is a story about themselves.”

Mike McCurry, who was President Clinton's press secretary from 1995-1998, also serves as a lay leader in the United Methodist Church. In a letter to his congregation, McCurry said, "My career has been built around campaigns, politics, and presidents. My passion these past several years, however, has been getting my political friends awakened to the possibility of moving mountains when the church helps us deepen our faith."

George Stephanopoulos was the spokesperson for the Clinton administration until 1994, although Dee Dee Myers was the official press secretary. Today, he is an anchor on Good Morning America and the chief political correspondent for ABC News.
