House Homeland Security Committee Schedule for April 7-11, 2014

Issued By
April 12, 2014

The House Homeland Security Committee has announced the following hearings for next week.

TUESDAY, April 8 at 10 a.m.

Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security

Authorizing Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement

311 Cannon House Office Building

Witnesses Include:

  • Mr. Kevin K. McAleenan, Acting Deputy Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Mr. Daniel D. Ragsdale, Acting Director, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Subcommittee Chairman Candice Miller (R-MI) on the hearing: "These two agencies help secure the border and investigate cross-border crime, which is critical to our national security.  However, since the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2002, they have never been formally authorized by the Congress. Earlier this year, I introduced authorizing language for CBP and ICE that will better define their missions and responsibilities to secure the nation, remove dangerous aliens, investigate cross border criminal activity, and facilitate trade and commerce. On Tuesday, we will hear about how these agencies have evolved and expanded over the years and what authorizations are needed for their respective missions."

WEDNESDAY, April 9 at 10 a.m.

Homeland Security Committee

The Boston Marathon Bombings, One Year On: A Look Back to Look Forward

311 Cannon House Office Building

Invited Witnesses Include:

  • Commissioner Edward F. Davis III, Fellow, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
  • Mr. Edward P. Devau, Chief of Police, Watertown Police Department
  • Mr. Jeffrey J. Pugliese, Sergeant, Watertown Police Department

Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) on the hearing: "As we approach the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, we should take time to look at what lessons have been learned since the tragedy and how we can improve our defenses against attacks in the future. It is the oversight role of Congress to examine these issues, and also to recognize the officials who were instrumental in capturing those responsible. Next week, we will hear directly from the individuals on the ground after the blasts, and those who relentlessly pursued the alleged-bombers. We will also discuss how the recommendations in the Committee's recent investigative report can be implemented in order to help prevent another attack."
