Harriet Miers, 60, assumed her most recent role as President Bush's adviser on ethical and legal issues after working as staff secretary during Bush's first term.

Miers has spent much of her time overseeing nominations and teaching new staff members about White House ethics and judicial powers. The soft-spoken Dallas native met Bush when he was running for Texas governor, and she has been his adviser ever since.

As governor, he named her chairwoman of the Texas Lottery Commission, a $2.6 billion operation. Before joining Bush, Miers served as the first woman president of the Texas State Bar and the Dallas Bar Association, and as a managing partner at the law firm Locke Liddell & Sapp.

On numerous occasions, the National Law Journal named her one of the nation's 100 most powerful attorneys, and as one of the country's top 50 woman lawyers.

Miers also has been involved in local and statewide politics in Texas. In 1989, she was elected to a two-year term as an at-large candidate on the Dallas City Council. She decided not to seek re-election at the end of her term.

Born in Dallas on Aug. 10, 1945, Miers, who is single, went on to earn undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist University. Her mother and three brothers still reside in the Lone Star State.
