Prior to his nomination, Samuel Alito, 55, served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.

Alito has been dubbed "Scalito" or "Scalia-lite" by some lawyers because his judicial philosophy and Italian heritage invites comparisons to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

He was a federal prosecutor, assistant solicitor general, deputy assistant attorney general and U.S. attorney for New Jersey before President George H.W. Bush appointed him to the 3rd Circuit in 1990.

Alito received his bachelor's degree from Princeton University and attended Yale Law School, where he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal.

Alito went on to clerk for Judge Leonard Garth of the 3rd Circuit. The two now serve on the bench together.

Alito married Martha-Ann Bomgardner in 1985. They have two children.
