Japan Raises Nuclear Disaster Threat Level

April 11, 2011

Japan's nuclear safety agency has raised the threat level of a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant to the highest possible level, the Associated Press reports.

The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan raised the severity rating from a 5 to a 7, its highest level, putting it on par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the then-U.S.S.R.

Officials with the agency speaking to Japanese television said the radiation currently leaking from the crippled plant is 10 percent of that of the Chernobyl disaster, the AP reports.
