Rep. Steve Israel, the top Democrat charged with helping to retake the House in 2012, said he loses sleep over the growing and uncertain impact of organizations outside the party that can raise unlimited amounts and spend it on congressional races across the country.
“This is what keeps me up at night,” said Israel, D-N.Y., chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
He said the DCCC, which had outraised its Republican counterpart in 2010, didn’t as much lose to the Republican Party but “we lost to Karl Rove and the Koch brothers,” who have donated and raised money for Republican super PACs.
In the current cycle, Democrats again trail the GOP in terms money raised by organizations outside the party.
