Dan Quayle On President George H.W. Bush's Inauguration

As Told To Gia Fenoglio

Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009

Dan Quayle
Vice President
Age at the Time: 41

Originally published Jan. 13, 2001

I guess the strongest memory for me was when Sandra Day O'Connor said, "Raise your right hand," and I placed my left hand on the Bible. There must have been tens of thousands of cameras clicking at the same moment -- and that's when you know you are sworn in as the Vice President of the United States.

President Bush said to me, "We'll make a good team." He believed that, and I believed that, and notwithstanding what happened in 1992, we were a good team.

I believe we had 13 inaugural balls, or maybe 11, but there were a lot. At about 12:30 a.m. at the 11th ball, that's when it became a blur. You've gone through the parade, the swearing-in, the reception, and each ball, where I showed I was not Fred Astaire.

When the Reagans left after the swearing-in, the President and I stood there and waved. I remember he turned to me and said, "A very good, honorable man. I'll miss working with him."
