Rep. Lacy Clay defeated Rep. Russ Carnahan in Missouri's 1st District Democratic primary.
- With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Clay led Carnahan 62 percent to 35 percent. The Associated Press called the race for Clay.
- Clay effectively marshaled black support and endorsements from the white Missouri Democratic establishment to hold the St. Louis seat, despite Carnahan's efforts to tie Clay to predatory lenders. Fewer than 30 percent of Carnahan's old constituents were placed in the new, majority-black district.
- Missouri Republicans eliminated Carnahan's seat in redistricting with help from some urban Democrats allied with Clay, and Carnahan blamed Clay for not doing enough to help preserve another Democratic-leaning seat in the St. Louis area.
- The district is safely Democratic, and Clay is all but assured a seat in the 113th Congress. For more visit Hotline On Call.
