You Have About A Million Missed Calls

John Edwards "has all but disappeared" since ending his WH bid. If he's made up his mind about who -- or whether -- he's going to endorse, "not only is he keeping quiet about it, he's not even putting himself in a position where he might be asked." He's "even acting coy in private." Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC) "wanted to consult with Edwards before making his own endorsement," so he "called a few times" but "never heard back." Watt "ended up passing along a message through Edwards' wife, Elizabeth," that he planned to back Barack Obama. Watt, on Edwards: "I presume if he had a concern, he'd call" (Baker, Charlotte Observer, 4/18).

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
