Who's Responsible For This?

Updated: November 23, 2010 | 11:43 a.m.

Businessman Lane Grigsby released a TV ad attacking state Rep. Don Cazayoux (D) on health care taxes.

Full script:

ANNCR: "Don Cazayoux voted for $90 million in new hospital taxes, raised 12 different health care fees, fees on physical therapists. He even raised fees on death certificates. And then, voted legislators lifetime health insurance. Don Cazayoux raised our cost of health care. How much more damage can he do in Washington? Vote your heart, but be informed. Lane Grigsby is responsible for the content of this communication. Vote.

The DCCC writes that Grigsby, "a wealthy construction company owner with a record of ethical problems," has "a long record of not playing by the rules." He "unethically colluded" with a candidate to make an attack ad that "viciously and personally attacked the candidates' opponent and he "hid his company's interest in state contracts to build hurricane shelters." DCCC spokesperson Kyra Jennings: "Lane Grigsby and ['96 SEN nominee/newspaper publisher] Woody Jenkins [R] have a lot in common – both have unethically tried to deceive Louisiana voters, both have shady business dealings, and both oppose worker's rights" (release, 4/22).

Meanwhile, the NRCC began airing an ad this a.m. CD-wide, attacking Cazayoux on taxes and his association with Dem leaders (Hotline reporting, 4/22).

Full script:

MALE ANNCR: "Everything today has a warning label. Why not politicians too? Like Don Cazayoux." FEMALE ANNCR: "You mean Don Tax you?" MALE: "It'd say that a vote for Don Cazayoux is a vote for Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. Obama and Pelosi voted to raise income taxes. So did Don Cazayoux." FEMALE: "Ha, Don Tax you." MALE: "Cazayoux also supports Obama's radical agenda on health care. If Don Tax you gets to Washington," FEMALE: "They'll do what they tell him to do." MALE: "The National Republican Congressional Committee is responsible for the content of this ad."

General: 5/3

Election 2012 – Managing Alternatives

5:06 p.m.

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
