DSCC is up with a new TV ad by McMahon, Squier, Lapp & Associates. Full script "Losing Ground":

ANNCR: "In Oregon, Gordon Smith talks about common ground while working families are losing ground. Because in Washington, Smith has stood with George Bush and the special interests... Supporting tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas... tax cuts for the wealthy... tax giveaways to big oil. Gordon Smith says he's independent but his record says different. And in today's economy, we need a Senator on our side. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising" (release, 5/8).

State House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D) is up with a new TV ad by Dixon/Davis Media Group. Full script "Believe":

FEMALE ANNCR: "Democrats are uniting for change. Except... Steve Novick. Novick insulted Hillary Clinton as a 'coward,' and a 'traitress.' Novick accused Democratic Congresswoman Darlene Hooley of 'peddling a lie.' He even said there's 'nothing to like' about Barack Obama. And called Obama a 'special-interest fraud.' Jeff Merkley believes in bringing us together, not tearing people down. That's the change Democrats need." MERKLEY: "I'm Jeff Merkley. And I approve this message" (release, 5/7).

Novick manager Jake Weigler: "It's a pitiful reflection on how much their campaign is running on empty. No one has even brought up these comments or objected to them except for Jeff Merkley... The one dividing Democrats here is Jeff Merkley." Merkley spokesperson Matt Canter: "This is not an attack ad... these are (Novick's) words" (Mapes, Portland Oregonian blog, 5/7).

Election 2012 – Managing Alternatives

5:06 p.m.

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
