"The first thing that will happen will be the end of public opinion polling as an industry in the United States, and it would probably be the end of political punditry."

— Dem strategist James Carville, on a McCain upset, "American Morning," CNN, 11/4.

The Envelope Please ...

Here's to all the "little people" of '08. You know, the ones who aren't always in the limelight but w/out whom, the storyline of this incredible year would not have been possible:

-- Best Supporting Actors In A Primary/Caucus: DNC rules cmte, superdelegates, Huck IA mgr Chip Saltsman. And, the two most prescient voices on the IA caucuses, Ann Selzer and Mike Henry.

-- Best Comedy Series: Romney's family vacation w/dog, MSNBC's intra-family feud; Gravel's "ads" and "campaign". And, of course, SNL.

-- Best Drama: K. Kilpatrick, NV's Gibbons, NY's Spitzer and John Edwards. Good job, gents.

-- Best "Comeback Kids": Daschle, from defeated leader to poss. WH CoS or cabinet sec; Powell, no longer remembered just for his '02 U.N. speech; Dean and his 50-state strategy. (Then again, the ultimate winner here might be McCain).

-- Best "Apology" Ads: Stevens tells AK that he's innocent; FL's Feeney makes "rookie" mistake w/ Abramoff; MN's Franken admits he's sometimes "gone too far;" and MN's Bachmann says she "doesn't always get [her] words right."

-- You'll be up late, and we'll be right there with you. Check out "On Call", early and often, for The Hotline's special election night coverage.

Considering all House rematches on the ballot today, the most are occuring in TX (5), with 4 re-matches apiece in CA, FL, NY, and PA. But those are all big states, and it's probably more impressive that 4 of the WA's 9 House races ...
