CONSULTANT CANDID

Worth A Thousand Words

Joe Fuld Is pres. of The Campaign Workshop. Fuld has worked for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the CA Nurses Assn, Defenders of Wildlife, DC Vote, the Human Rights Campaign Fund, the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, as well as many other groups, candidates and ballot measures. Prior to becoming a consultant Joe served as the northeast political dir. at the DNC in '96, and between '91-'95 managed 10 campaigns throughout the country. But today, he is our Consultant Candid.

What was your first job?

Camp counselor, Town of Ramapo Day Camp.

What is your proudest moment professionally?

Helping elect openly gay candidates across the country who many folks thought could never get elected.

If you could be in any other line of work, what would it be?

Photographer for National Geographic Magazine -- I like travel and I like images that tell a story. We try and do that with our work.

Of what campaign (past, present or future) would you most like to be a part?

Insert name of candidate I am currently pitching here ___.

What individual who does your kind of work for the other party do you respect the most, and why?

Kelton Morgan. He is good at what he does and cares about his clients -- sometimes to a fault. We should all have that kind of dedication.

Negative campaigning -- good or bad?

Depends who does it. To me politics is a comparative process. As long as the comparisons are true then comparisons are a good thing.

What is your favorite restaurant to meet clients?

Hank's Oyster Bar -- I am a fan of small paces with good local food. Both of Jamie Leeds restaurants in town (Hank's and Commonwealth) are places I like. I wish there were more places like this in DC. I also wish CF Folks served dinner.

What is the first section of the newspaper you read?

Metro - my wife always steal the front page, except on Wednesday when I read the food section.

A question from last week's participant, Jim Crounse of Mack/Crounse Group: Who will the Republicans nominate for president in 2012?

I hope Sarah Palin. It is the dream of all political consultants and comedians. I had a lot of fun building www.dresslikepalin.com for The California Nurses Association Last cycle.

Please pose a question for the next interviewee.

What is a trait from a client you would most like to emulate?

Election 2012 – Managing Alternatives

5:06 p.m.

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
