Some top-level Hillary Clinton backers in NM "are crying foul" over the selection of the state's 12th and final superdelegate to the DNC. In a letter to NM Dem Chair Brian Colon, 10 ranking party members- including 4 Clinton superdelegates- accused Colon of breaking the delegate selection rules. Colon said 4/30 that backers of both Clinton and Barack Obama were pressuring him heavily to before his nomination of the 12th superdelegate, who is still uncommitted. Colon added that the party broke no rules in the selection process. Colon: "The Clintons are fighting for every single delegate, and the Obamas are fighting for every single delegate. At the end of the day, what I did was follow the rules."

Colon has said that, under party rules, he had the sole authority for nominating candidates for that spot. He nominated 2 candidates- both of whom were uncommitted. Party central cmte members supporting Clinton tried to nominate someone of their own from the floor, but Colon said party rules prohibited it. Colon said he "abided by party rules" by consulting with several members of the executive cmte before making is nominations (Jones, Albuquerque Journal, 5/1).

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
