The NRSC "launched a website" 4/10 "attacking" Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) by "highlighting liens the IRS filed against Begich" in the '90s for late payroll tax payments by his business. Both Begich and Sen. Ted Stevens (R) "condemned" the NRSC's tactics. Stevens asked the cmte to stop "this kind of attack." Stevens, in a letter to Begich: "Will you do the same and ask the Alaska Democratic Party to take down their Web site which smears and distorts my record?"

Begich, in an interview: "If there is something on there that's inaccurate, stretches the truth or smears him it should come off of there, absolutely" (Cockerham, Anchorage Daily News, 4/11).
