CALIFORNIA 04 (R/ROSEVILLE -- DOOLITTLE)
Getting Dinged
Supporters of ex-Rep. Doug Ose (R) filed an FEC complaint 5/5 "over a campaign committee they charged was improperly attempting to help" state Sen. Tom McClintock (R). The complaint "assailed" ex-McClintock aide Steve Ding for "soliciting contributions" for the indie cmte "Partnership for America" from Indian tribal donations at a recent Nat'l Indian Gaming Assoc. convo.
The Ose camp "charged" that Ding's involvement "violated federal election rules requiring" that indie groups work separately from candidate cmtes. McClintock was at the same convo seeking contributions. But McClintock spokesperson Steve Devereux said he "wasn't working with Ding and has no association" with the Parnership with America org (Hecht, Sacramento Bee, 5/6). Ding "acknowledged" he saw McClintock at the convo but "emphatically denied doing any fundraising work." Ding: "If Doug Ose spent as much time campaigning as he does chasing rumors and filing FEC complaints, he might not be down 20 points in the polls" (Kucinich, The Hill, 5/5).
Placer Co. Super./Ose supporter Rocky Rockholm: "Senator McClintock's campaign clearly violated those rules and there should be consequences" (Sacramento Bee, 5/6).
