The Dem camps argued 5/1 whether Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton could do the most for OR in the WH. "The skirmish started when the Obama" camp released an 8-page "compendium of 'Oregon priorities' that it said had been neglected because of the war in Iraq." The Clinton camp "fired back that she's taken much more specific positions" on OR issues. "Her aides gleefully pointed out that the Obama position paper talked about cleaning up" the Great Lakes but made no mention of a body of water in OR.

Obama spokesperson Nick Shapiro said his camp wasn't trying to match Clinton's OR compact. Clinton spokesperson Julie Edwards: [An] "Oregon plan should focus on Oregon ... We're really looking forwards to seeing Senator Obama's upcoming plan to protect salmon runs in the Chicago River." Sharpio said Obama "is proud of his leadership in efforts to reduce pollution in the Great Lakes, which he said is an important example for voters in all states. He said the Clinton jibes were 'cheap, divisive Washington, D.C. political games" (Mapes, Portland Oregonian, 5/2).
